Indian Men’s Hockey team rises to 6th Position in FIH rankings
India moved up 2 places to the 6th position according to the updated International Hockey Federation (FIH) ranking released on 6th of November after the conclusion of all five Continental Championships. It is for the first time India has been ranked so high in the rankings and is sitting at the brink of the top 5 teams of the world. The upgrade in the ranking has come on account of the good performances from India this year and qualification for the Rio Olympics.
Hockey India, President, Dr. Narinder Dhruv Batra expressed
his joy saying, “This is a proud moment for us as the boys have been
performing really well and they have been rewarded for it with a rise in
the rankings. This is an achievement in itself as we are sitting at the
border line of the top 5 teams in the world. We hope for a good show in
the India VS Australia series and the Hero Hockey World League Finals,
and maybe some more points will help us step over the border and enter
the top 5 of the world.”
This is the best ranking for the young
Indian senior men’s team in the last five years. There’s no change in
the men’s top three nations, with Men’s World Cup holders Australia at
the helm of the rankings, Netherlands ranked second and Germany third.
While England moves into fourth, Argentina continues their rise as they
move up to fifth place.
